The O.C. Fun Fact: Benjamin Mckenzie still binge watches The O.C. every year!

benjamin mckenzie behind the scenes smiling

In a 2014 Hollywood Life interview with Benjamin Mckenzie - Ben mentioned that he still has respect for his early work and that every year he watches the entire O.C. series. Yes even season 4!

"Every year I sit through and watch four seasons. Bizarre? No." Later in the interview Ben mentions his early days before getting "the big break". "I was driving in my five hundred dollar car (click to see what kind of car that was) to my temp agency job…basically like a telemarketer, the phone rang and they said I got The O.C..I did drive to work and I did tell my boss I’m not coming back, but that was about as much as I ever did. That was a pretty good moment." Now isn't that sweet! Not sure if Ben still has time to binge watch the O.C. every-year now that he has a wife, a baby and the hit TV show "Gotham" but we are hoping he still does! Chino 4 ever!

Behind the Scenes: Where does the Cohen staircase really lead to?

the cohens oc staircase behind the scenes

Where does the Cohen staircase actually lead to? This is a trick question. No it doesn't lead to the stairway to heaven but A+ for the comedic creativity. For the viewers, the stairs in the Cohen house of course lead to one place - Seth's room and possibly the infamous mystery guest rooms we never get to see! But truthfully the staircase leads somewhere far stranger...

seth, summer and zach stand behind the scenes on set the o.c.

As you can see from this rare behind the scenes photo above the stairs lead to, well, nowhere really, look to the top right, the wall just cuts off. You walk up, you walk down in a deep depression - I mean look at the expression on Adam Brody's face, even he's bummed that his room isn't actually up there!

the o.c. cohen house front of house set backstage behind the scenes photo

As you see from this super duper RARE external house photo (1of 2 that exist), the stairs go up into blank nothingness kind of like Summer Robert's step mothers brain, not much going on up there! There is no second floor just various lighting and scaffolds. If you are having trouble locating where the stairs would be - they are located on the opposite side of the rounded wall on the right (right of the rightest front door white pillar).

Manhattan Beach Raleigh Studios 27, 28

The Cohen O.C. mansion's interior set was actually built indoors within stage 28 at the Raleigh Manhattan Beach Studios in Manhattan Beach, CA (now called MBS Media Campus). The set was actually built to scale of the original pilot interiors/exteriors. Seth's room was located in another area within stage 27 which also housed other O.C. interior sets such as Summer's room and Marissa's room as well as the harbor school. Stage 27 also housed O.C. sets like Harbor School interiors, The Crab Shack and Sandy's beach office!

Mind blown? Your welcome.

The O.C. Fun Fact: Peter Gallagher was trained by an actual Lawyer!?

In an interview Peter Gallagher mentioned that to get ready for the role as Sandy Cohen he was instructed by a real life Bronx lawyer named Jeremy Schneider (criminal defense attorney). He spent countless hours with the guy to further his believability for the role as Sandy Cohen. Jeremy is a very successful New York attorney and much like Sandy Cohen, Jeremy lives with his wife and two sons! You can't help but notice that their hair and suits even look similar. Cheers to you Jeremy Schneider for preparing Sandy for such a crucial role! Can the real public defender please stand up?

The O.C. Flashback Series: Adam Brody worked where before he was famous?!?!

Early promotional shot for season 1 of The O.C.

Our main man Adam Brody AKA Seth Cohen had quite the career before he hit it big as an actor.
Do you know where Adam was working before he started getting roles in films/TV such as Growing Up Brady (2000) or Once and Again (2001)?

While Adam was attending local college he worked part-time at Blockbuster, you know the movie rental store that pretty much disappeared years ago (there is still a few locations left believe it or not).

Adam Brody's best friend Ari Davis
Adam worked there before moving with his best friend (Ari Davis) to L.A. to seek out an acting career. Ari Davis and Adam Brody were skateboard and surf buddy's too!

Adam's thoughts about working at Blockbuster "It was the most boring job I've ever had. But it was sort of inspirational putting away movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer with those kids on the front of the box". Out of the two Adam has been much more successful than his best bud Ari but we have high hopes!

Overall this story is rather motivational! Who would have thought Adam would also soon be on the cover of some of those movies covers too. Just goes to show you that anything is possible so don't take your current crappy job as your final destination, good things come to those who dream! Who knows you may get your very own pool house one day......sigh......

The O.C. Fun Fact: Oliver Trask originally written out by suicide?

Originally the writers of season 1 episode 18 "The Truth" had Oliver successfully commit suicide. But the producers chose a less tragic end where Ryan managed to save the situation, a much lighter and heroic ending. No details on how Oliver was originally suppose to do it but it could have either been by his gun or his pills. Makes you wonder how much different season 1 would have been if it involved something as tragic as that 3 quarters into the series. Either way Ryan would have still been super distant to Marissa for ignoring him multiple times regarding Oliver's sanity. If you have a copy of an early script make sure to shoot it over to us!

The O.C. Fun Fact: Which Parenthood actor starred in The O.C.?

Do you remember the scene when Summer and Zach are in the airport about to head out of the country to attend Zach's sisters wedding? Well while Summer is contemplating calling the whole thing off and staying in Newport she suddenly sees a curly haired Jewish looking boy playing with a toy horse. Seeing that little kid makes her think of Seth, thus helping her make the decision to not go with Zach and rescue Seth from his upsidedown spidey fall. The actor playing that little boy is no other than Max Burkholder best known for his character Max Bravermen in the hit TV show Parenthood!

Here is a recent photo of Max Burkholder in 2016!

The O.C. Fun Fact: Anna Stern and Jesse Pinkman?

aaron paul and samaire armstrong couple dated pinkman stern

The actor that played Anna Stern (Samaire Armstrong) used to date Breaking Bad's Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) back in 2002! Hows that for random? But I get it he radiates confidence!

The O.C. Fun Fact: Adam Brody originally tried out for the part of Ryan Atwood?

seth cohen tried out to play ryan atwood the o.c.

Yes, this is true! Originally Adam Brody the actor that plays the goofy, quirky, sheek-geek Seth Cohen originally tried for the part of Ryan Atwood - the troubled teen from the other side of the tracks.

Legend has it that Adam Brody (working at Blockbuster at the time) was going to dozens of auditions and when it came time for him to impress the casting directors of The O.C., well he totally bombed.

Adam came in without being prepared what so ever! Josh Schwartz (creator of The O.C.) was instantly not impressed, he kind of hated him really, Josh was even quoted to saying "I never want to see that kid ever again!"

A month later when they still didn't have anyone to play Seth Cohen. The casting director Patrick Rush told Josh Schwartz “I’m telling you, this Adam Brody is very special". So they decided to call Adam Brody back.

This time Adam Brody wowed the casting directors and Josh Schwartz by learning the lines prior to the audition. They saw something very compelling about him and gave him the big fat YES for the role of Seth Cohen. Josh Schwartz later admitted that Adam Brody reminded him a lot of himself, which was perfect because Seth Cohen is loosely based on Josh Schwartz and some of his real life Jewish experiences.

Now take a moment of silence and perhaps a sigh or relief as you thank your lucky stars Adam Brody's on screen nickname wasn't Chino!

For a glimpse of what Adam Brody would have been as a "bad boy" Ryan Atwood catch Season 2 episode 7 "The Family Ties"..In the episode see Seth wears wife beaters, steals cars and acts like a douche bag!

The O.C. Fun Fact: The French Why?

In France The O.C. is titled newport BEACH. This is because when your from a different country there is going to be cultural gaps from country to country and certain things (such as media titles) aren't going to make a lot of sense to you. Heck even a ton of American's were confused by the real title of the show "The O.C." especially people that lived in Orange County. Back in the early 00's locals touted in various publications that nobody says they live in "The O.C.". The name was a bit contrived just for the show although the shows creator Josh Schwartz swears that he heard people using the phrase "The O.C." in his California college days. This kind of silly name changing happens fairly often when foreign movies/shows get ported over to the USA and vice versa.

For instance the classic Travolta movie Grease was renamed Vaseline in Argentina because the word "grease" only meant "motor oil" to them and not slang for 50's leather jacket wearing punks with slicked back hair. The word Vaseline made some sense to Argentina, as you could use that to grease hair. They didn't have a Greaser subculture like the USA had. It's hard to believe that happened, Vaseline is a completely laughable movie title! Horrible marketing job guys!

So in France they marketed the show that way to simply clear confusion. The real question now is if Luke Ward says his famous line in the pilot episode the same or did they overdub him saying "Welcome to Newport Beach Bitc*!". Sa cré bleu, we may never know!

How bout watching the whole series in French? That will be a whole new experience!

The O.C. Fun Fact: The Cohen Infinity Pool

seth and ryan floating in pool the o.c.

The Cohen infinity pool seemed like it was used a lot in the show but in reality its acting days were numbered. But despite its lack of screen time the Cohen pool is hiding a very big (or shallow) secret. According to Josh Schwartz the Executive Creator of the show and do to studio limitations, the pool was actually only four feet deep. This explains why there wasn't any Cohen cannon ball competitions etc (that could have pushed the show at least through a 5th season). In order to make the pool seem realistic, the actors were told to stand on their knees (talk about knee burn). This fatal flaw could be why the pool wasn't featured much more than a few episodes and also as a mood setting prop (which I find very effective). Interestingly enough this must have meant that the whole studio was built above ground on a platform high enough to accommodate the four feet deep infinity pool. Furthermore in the special "Welcome To The O.C.: A Day In the Life" Josh Schwartz admits "The surface of the hot tub is a little bit... icky. I wouldn't go in there. Notice none of the actors have been in the hot tub for like a year and a half. We should probably have someone look into that.".

Episodes the pool was actually used (also counting the hot tub):

Season 1 Episode 2 "The Model Home"

seth and ryan floating in pool the o.c.

Here we have the first time the infinity pool was used in its short life. Seth and Ryan briefly float around in the pool while Seth asks Ryan what he wants to do. Seth asks Ryan if he would like to go to an "IMAX shark movie" (referenced multiple times in the series), Ryan responds "I think I just want to take it easy.".

Season 1 Episode 5 "The Outsider"

ryan and marissa hang out in pool the o.c.

Ryan and Marissa finally have their date, they eat grilled cheese (don't knock it til you try it), and push each other into the pool only to get interrupted by a certain curly haired someone via Ryan's cell phone.

Season 1 Episode 7 "The Girlfriend"

gabrielle bikini the o.c.
seth and ryan drooling over gabrielle the o.c.
Gabrielle Nichole Hiltz bikini pool floating the o.c.

Ryan sees a blonde bombshell swimming in the Cohen pool, he does a double take (priceless reactions above). It's Caleb's new girlfriend/plaything 20 something Gabrielle (played by Nichole Hiltz). Seth and Ryan spend a good while oggling at her in all her curvy gold-digger greatness and then a whole lot of other drama happens (spoiler alert). No but seriously watch this episode, its great and also a very daring move on the writers part due to the age difference of Gabrielle and Ryan. Risk well taken!

ryan seth float in pool the o.c.

There is also a second pool scene at 23 minutes Ryan and Seth floating on water beds, man they are abusing the pool in this episode!

Season 1 Episode 9 "The Heights"

kirsten sandy kiss hot tub the o.c.

Kirsten and Sandy still find time to be lovable despite Sandy going ahead with the case against Caleb Nichol and Kirsten's company involving building on sacred land where the "Swamp Rose" grows.

Season 1 Episode 14 "The Countdown"

Hailey nichol pool party new years the o.c.

Kirsten's Sister Hailey Nichol crashes the Cohen's house to "invite a few friends over" for new years eve. Turns into an all out pool party rager with Ryan and Seth locked in the pool house.

Season 1 Episode 16 "The Links"

seth hanging out by the pool golf

Ryan finds out that hes going to have to get good at golf, since that's where Oliver is taking them. Seth and Sandy hang out and give him some pointers. He's gonna need all the help he can get!

Season 1 Episode 21 "The Goodbye Girl"

eddie ryan punched in pool the o.c.

Eddie comes to see Theresa at the Caleb Nichol Riviera magazine "Man of the Year" ceremony hosted at the Cohen's house. You guessed it, another pool scene and this time Ryan goes headfirst!

Season 1 Episode 26 "The Strip"

julie and hailey pool fight the o.c.

Kirsten hosts a bachelorette party at her house and then a cat fight happens between Hailey, Julie and oh yeah the hired chip and dales (not small) stripper. If you watch closely you can see how truly shallow the pool is not to mention small.

Season 2 Episode 24 "The Dearly Beloved"

ryan and seth pool the o.c.

Wow I didn't think we were going to see a Cohen pool scene in the second season, guess I was wrong..The very last episode of season 2 features Ryan and yes Seth floating across the pool like a pair of synchronized swimmers, this time Ryan offers Seth an "IMAX Shark Movie", very ironic. Consequently a main character meets his demise in a pool in this very episode.

I think it makes sense why the pool was featured less in season two, as you can see above there were several scenes in season 1 (more than I originally thought) that featured the Cohen pool. I think the lack of scenes was caused by overexposure and also due to the new characters and locations like the Bait Shop etc that was brought into the show in the second season. After all there is only so much you can show in a 42 minute time slot!

So there you have it, an exhaustive report on all the times the The Cohen pool was swam in/sat in/floated in or pushed/punched in (Ryan I must say you took that gracefully!). If I left any scenes out which could very likely be possible please let me know, thanks!
